Red wine, a title recognized by many. When you consider which red wine is the one with the best flavor for you it’s important to take the time to taste a variety of red wines and consider your distinct palate. When looking at the vast array of red wine options among the most well-known and popular is sweet red wine, dry red wine and deep red wine. Within each of these categories are an immense amount of wines to choose from. Sweet red wine lends a fruity, sweet taste to wine from the fruits and other light flavors used to make it. Fruit wines are popular because of the sweetness that works well with desserts and other light flavors. The next set of red wines are the traditional red wines, these often include French red wine, like Beaujolais, and Italian red wines, like Lambrusco. They are often enhanced with other bold liquors, like brandy, and are known as the after-dinner drink. Ports can also be progressively less sweet with the Ruby as the sweetest, the Tawny as less sweet and the Vintage as the least sweet of all ports. A Ruby is the youngest type of port and therefore the sweetest, while a Tawny Port has been aged a bit longer and is a little less sweet. Dry red wine is the least sweet type of red wine there is and is also one of the most popular. Dry red wine can include a large variety of wines, of those the most popular are Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. If you are looking to try something a little different, consider branching outside your comfort zone and tasting an Australian red wine or Shiraz. These are both great dry red wines that are paired great with full bodied, rich meals like steak, lobster and dark stews.
