Tasty Christmas Treats

Christmas is undoubtedly a time for indulgence and the sharing of gifts. Gifts can be expensive however, especially if you have a big family or lots of friends. So why not make something that is cheap but no less well received like candy. Below are some great sweet recipes from IWOOT.

Fudge. This is what you will need
•    A non-stick heavy-based saucepan
•    A sweets thermometer
•    A couple of baking trays
•    1lb granulated sugar, ½ pint milk, 2oz butter, 1 tin condensed milk.

Method: Place all the ingredients into the pan and melt very slowly whilst stirring. When the thermometer displays around 110oC, the mixture should begin to darken and look more caramelised. Take off the heat and stir until mixture becomes very tough and grainy. Dispense the mix into a couple of trays and leave for a good couple of hours to cool. When the mix has had a chance to cool and harden, cut it up and offer it round

Choc Chip Cookies. Here’s whats needed
•    Mixing bowl
•    Grease-proof paper
•    Baking trays
•    4.5.5oz flour, 2.5oz butter, 1 egg, 2oz brown sugar,2oz caster sugar, 4oz choc chips, ½ teaspoon bicarbonate of soda, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.

Method: Add flour, sugar, butter, vanilla extract, and bicarbonate of soda into a bowl and mix together well with your hands or a spoon if you don’t want to get mucky. Add the egg and continue mixing until the mixture is doughy and a little sticky. The mixture should then be separated into balls the size of a squash ball and laid on grease proof paper-lined oven trays. Leave a space about the size of a cup saucer between each cookie ball as they will expand and flatten out. Heat in the oven at between 180-200oC for around 12 minutes, but it is best to keep and eye on the cookies as ovens vary in cooking speed. Leave to cool for 15mins before eating.  For more gift ideas and treat recipes visit the I Want One of Those blog

Creative But Easy Halloween Treats

Halloween Treats

Treats belong to Halloween as turkey belongs to Thanksgiving. it does not matter if you are throwing a party, have created a haunted house or if you are expecting a lot of trick or treaters at your door step, you need Halloween treats. In this article we will show you how to make some of the most tasty but easy Halloween treats you can imagine.

Healthy Halloween Treats?

We need to think about healthy snacks because there are already so many youngsters who are struggling with weight problems. Halloween is a holiday in particular where treats, snacks and food is important but there really are ways to reduce the amount of sugar and fats we give our children as a treat.

A few yummy ideas for reasonably healthy Halloween treats are:

#1 Healthy Halloween treats: Caramel Apples

We can create a ‘light’ version of caramel apples because they contain a lot of sugar. And because it is one of those Halloween treats most children love you are still giving something they want. Caramel apples are easy to make, just place a Popsicle stick in the center of the apple and melt some squares of caramel in a sauce pan and dip the apple half in the caramels and let the caramel drip around the other half. To get a bit of a chunky feeling you can roll the apple in some nuts or raisins. because you only dip half of the apple you use less sugar and create a scary looking apple in the same time.

#2 Healthy Halloween Treats: Halloween Goo

Most people like Jell-O and when you add some small pieces of fruit in the shape of body parts you have created a mystery Halloween Goo that the kids will love. Just cut some fruits in to shape and make the Jell-O according the package. You need to put the Jell-O with the fruit in the refrigerator for at least two hours. The kids will love to pull the body parts out of the Jell-O.

#3 Healthy Halloween Treats: Cut off fingers

Something simple and very spooky are cut off finger treats, you can use some cans of small hot-dogs and create, with ketchup, a nail on the end of the finger. You also need to tear the end of the hot-dog as if the finger was torn off. You can place it in a small box or on top of a bowl of spaghetti to make it more scary to pick out the finger.

As you can see there are many different ideas for Halloween treats, that are easy, fun, tasty and healthy. If you stop and think about it you will probably come up with many more. Look at vegetables, fruits, cheese and other foods and think about what kind of scary stuff you can create with it. Halloween is not about collecting as much junk food as you can, it is about the fun and the scare. Ask your children and they will think the same as they see and taste what kind of scary Halloween treats you have created.
